Both Tenuate Dospan and Phentermine are popular weight loss drugs that belong to the class of sympathomimetic amines and alter the release of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain, which promotes appetite suppression. People, who are trying to lose weight, tend to try different slimming pills, and many wonder “what is the difference between Tenuate and Phentermine”. Read on to find the answers.

First off, it is important to mention that Phentermine is a generic name of many weight loss meds, which are available on the slimming pills market under such brand names as Phentermine HCl 37.5mg, Adipex-P, Duromine, etc.* Tenuate Dospan, however, is a brand name for the medication, the active ingredient in which is Diethylpropion (known as Amfepramone in the UK).

(*For ease of understanding, we will use Phentermine as a collective name for all Phentermine-containing weight loss medications out there.)

Of course, their appearance is the first significant difference between the two anorectics. Even though they both come in oral form, you can find a huge variety of Phentermine-containing drugs, both pills and capsules that come in different shapes and colors, while Tenuate Dospan is available as tablets only.

The main ingredient, which brings the desired anorectic action, is different in both meds:

Name of the drug

Phentermine

Active ingredient

Phentermine Hydrochloride

Phentermine Ion exchange resin

Duration of action

Immediate release

Controlled release

Name of the drug

Tenuate

Active ingredient

Diethylpropion Hydrochloride

Duration of action

Immediate release

Controlled release

As you can see, Phentermine and Tenuate can provide both IR and CR action. However, choosing a controlled-release option of either of these slimming pills limits your possibility to adjust the dosage, since the modified release requires a careful preservation of the pill/capsule integrity. So you will not be able to divide Tenuate Dospan (CR) pill and get 100% equally effective action, which is also true for Duromine capsules (CR).

Immediate release pills, both Phentermine and Tenuate, allow for a better dose and dosing frequency adjustment, thus ensuring a better control of the CNS stimulant concentrations in the patient blood during the day.

Keep in mind that you should NOT increase the dose by taking more pills or capsules than your doctor recommended. Otherwise, you increase the risk of overdose and severe side effects.

Speaking of which, both Phentermine and Tenuate (Dospan) can cause a variety of side effects, the list of which you can find in the leaflets for the drugs. You can discuss with your doctor what you should do to prevent or minimize side effects of these anorectics, as well as what you should do if you feel any severe adverse reactions or fear of having overdosed.

Moving on to, probably, the most important question on “which of the two provides better results, Phentermine or Tenuate Dospan?” There can be no single or unambiguous answer, since the use of any weight loss drugs should be accompanied by a comprehensive weight loss program and lifestyle changes.

If none of these are observed, you may end up with zero results, while still risking to harm your health. No matter which they choose, Phentermine or Tenuate Dospan, UK patients need to keep in mind that weight loss therapy should not last longer than the allowed period, nor should you increase the dose prescribed.
